Alt-Az Mount
A mount that moves on two axes — up/down (altitude) and left/right (azimuth) — rather than aligned to Earth's rotation axis. Most smart telescopes use alt-az mounts because they are simpler, lighter, and self-aligning.
Aperture
The diameter of the telescope's main lens or mirror, usually measured in millimeters. Larger aperture gathers more light, letting you see fainter objects, and is one of the most important specs to compare when buying.
Bortle Scale
A nine-level numeric scale (1 = darkest, 9 = brightest urban sky) used to describe how light-polluted a location is. Smart telescope reviews often reference Bortle ratings to contextualize what results you can expect from your backyard.
Citizen Science Mode
A feature unique to Unistellar telescopes that lets the network's users contribute observations — such as asteroid occultations or exoplanet transits — to scientific campaigns coordinated with institutions like the SETI Institute.
Companion App
The smartphone or tablet application that controls a smart telescope, used for alignment, target selection, exposure settings, and downloading images. Examples include the Seestar app, Unistellar app, and Vaonis Singularity.
Dark Frame Subtraction
A noise-reduction technique where the telescope captures images with the shutter closed to map fixed noise patterns, then subtracts them from your real images. Many smart telescopes do this automatically in firmware.
Dew Heater
A resistive heating element wrapped around the telescope's lens or dew shield to prevent moisture from condensing on the optic during cold, humid nights. Without it, the image can fog over mid-session.
DSO (Deep-Sky Object)
Any astronomical target beyond our solar system, including nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. DSOs are the primary imaging targets for smart telescopes because live stacking reveals detail invisible to the naked eye.
EAA (Electronically Assisted Astronomy)
A method of observing and imaging where a camera and software work together in real time to reveal faint objects on a screen, rather than viewing through an eyepiece. Smart telescopes are purpose-built EAA devices.
Enhanced Vision Mode
Unistellar's branded name for its live-stacking imaging mode that progressively builds up a color image of deep-sky objects on your phone screen. Other brands use different names for essentially the same EAA function.
F-Ratio (Focal Ratio)
Focal length divided by aperture, written like f/5. A lower f-ratio (fast scope) gathers light more quickly and is better for imaging faint deep-sky objects; smart telescopes tend to have fast focal ratios like f/4 to f/5.
Field of View (FOV)
The patch of sky visible in a single image, usually expressed in degrees or arcminutes. A wide FOV fits large targets like the Orion Nebula; a narrow FOV is better for small targets like galaxies.
Firmware
The embedded software installed on the telescope itself that controls its hardware functions. Manufacturers like Seestar and Unistellar regularly push firmware updates that add features or fix bugs wirelessly.
FITS File
A lossless image format standard in astronomy that preserves all raw data from the sensor, including metadata. Saving FITS files from your smart telescope lets you post-process the image later in software like Siril.
Focal Length
The distance (in millimeters) from the lens or mirror to the point where light focuses, which determines how zoomed-in your view is. A longer focal length means higher magnification but a narrower field of view.
Gain
A camera setting that amplifies the sensor's signal before it is read out, similar to ISO on a DSLR. Higher gain makes the camera more sensitive to faint light but also increases noise; some smart telescope apps let you adjust this manually.
GoTo Alignment
An automated process where the telescope identifies its position and orientation by analyzing star patterns, then can automatically slew to any target you select in the app. Smart telescopes do this without a physical hand controller.
Image Stretching
A post-processing step that expands the faint tonal range of a raw astrophoto so nebulae and faint structures become visible to the human eye. Smart telescope apps apply an automatic stretch; tools like Siril let you control it precisely.
Light Pollution Filter
A filter that blocks wavelengths of artificial light (like sodium and LED streetlights) while passing the wavelengths emitted by nebulae. Filters like the ones used with the Seestar S50 can significantly improve results from suburban backyards.
Live Stacking
The process of continuously combining incoming camera frames in real time so the image gets progressively brighter and more detailed as you watch. This is the core trick that makes smart telescopes reveal nebulae and galaxies in minutes.
Narrowband Filter
A filter that passes only a very narrow range of wavelengths, typically hydrogen-alpha or oxygen-III, emitted by nebulae. Using one on a smart telescope dramatically cuts light pollution and sky glow, at the cost of dimmer stars.
Optical Tube Assembly (OTA)
The actual tube containing the lens or mirror and the camera sensor, separate from the mount. On smart telescopes the OTA and mount are usually sold as one integrated unit, but the term appears in spec comparisons.
Plate Solving
Software that matches a captured image of stars against a database to figure out exactly where the telescope is pointed, accurate to fractions of a degree. Smart telescopes use plate solving to align and re-center targets automatically.
Polar Alignment
The process of aligning a mount's rotation axis with Earth's north or south celestial pole to allow perfect tracking. Most all-in-one smart telescopes on alt-az mounts do not require polar alignment, unlike traditional equatorial setups.
Refractor
A telescope design that uses a lens to focus light, as opposed to mirrors. Most smart telescopes — including the Seestar S50, Vespera Pro, and DWARF III — are refractors, chosen for their compact size and sealed optical tube.
Sensor Size
The physical dimensions of the camera's image sensor inside the telescope. A larger sensor captures a wider field of view and generally produces less noise, which matters when comparing models like the Seestar S50 vs. Vespera Pro.
Singularity App
The companion app developed by Vaonis to control the Stellina and Vespera Pro smart telescopes. It handles alignment, target selection, and image capture, and can be used by multiple users simultaneously in a group observation session.
Siril
A free, open-source astrophotography processing program commonly used to post-process stacked images exported from smart telescopes. It handles calibration, stretching, and color correction beyond what the companion app provides.
Slewing
The motorized movement of the telescope as it rotates to point at a new target. In smart telescope apps, you simply tap a target and the scope slews automatically, usually completing alignment and centering in under a minute.
Sony IMX Sensor
A family of image sensors made by Sony commonly used in smart telescopes, often referenced by model number (e.g., IMX462, IMX585). Different IMX sensors vary in sensitivity, dynamic range, and color performance.
Stacking (Frame Count)
The number of individual exposures combined into a final image; more frames mean less noise and more detail. Smart telescope apps typically show a running frame count so you know how long a target has been integrated.
Sub-Exposure Length
The duration of each individual frame the sensor captures before it is added to the stack, typically ranging from 1 to 30 seconds on smart telescopes. Longer subs capture more signal but are more vulnerable to satellite trails and tracking errors.
TIFF File
A high-quality, lossless image format that smart telescopes sometimes export as an alternative to FITS. TIFF files are easier to open in consumer apps like Lightroom or Photoshop for quick editing.
Tracking
The telescope's ability to slowly move its motors to counteract Earth's rotation and keep a target centered in the frame during a long imaging session. Without accurate tracking, stars trail across the image.
Wi-Fi Hotspot Mode
The way most smart telescopes create their own local Wi-Fi network so your phone can connect directly to the device in the field, without needing an internet connection. Some models also support joining an existing home network.
