HarExperience has recently released their rendition of Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) for X-Plane 12, marking their debut in the United States after a series of European airports such as London Luton, Farnborough, and Bolzano.
Van Nuys is a general aviation airport – one of the busiest in the world – serving Greater Los Angeles with well over 200,000 aircraft operations a year (over 500 a day!).
It opened nearly 100 years ago in 1928, as Metropolitan Airport. It was then run by a small group of citizens who established a corporation to administer the airport’s needs. It has been mostly a general aviation airport since the beginning and became quite popular among Hollywood stars, even serving as a location for popular movies from the 1940s, such as Casablanca, Laurel and Hardy, and The Flying Deuces.
It was purchased by the government in 1942 to be converted into a US Army Air Field for World War 2, along with the purchase of additional nearby land to accommodate a runway extension and apron.
In addition to having a couple of units stationed there, it also housed an aircraft modification facility known as the Navy Lockheed Plant. It was just one of the several aircraft companies that would become established in the area.
In the following decade, the California Air National Guard based F-86 Sabre Jets there and built new permanent facilities. It was also in the 1950s that the airport was renamed Van Nuys Airport.
The late 1950s marked the expansion of the main runway to 8,001 feet (2,439 meters), allowing larger aircraft to land and operate safely in Van Nuys.
The California Air National Guard left Van Nuys in 1990, and the infrastructure they had formerly used was then transferred to the American Red Cross, which played a huge role during the Northridge Earthquake in 1994.
