Editorial Note: While we have already covered pngraf’s fantastic scenery, a recent update has brought a lot of new features and improvements, so we felt that it is worth a revisit.

Welcome to another edition of No Money Mondays! This week, we’re headed to the north of Poland to check out an amazing freeware rendition of the Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, made by pngraf for X-Plane 11 and 12.

Located 12km from the city centre of Gdańsk, the airport serves the Tricity metropolitan area, which consists of Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia, and has had over 7,300,000 passenger operations with over 61,000 aircraft movements.

The city of Gdańsk first saw passenger flights back in 1919, after a military airfield in the Free City of Danzig (a rather short-lived interwar city-state) had been repurposed into a civilian one after World War I. In the following years, the airfield had expanded and saw scheduled services to European cities, such as Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow, and Kaliningrad.

However, in the 1960s, the airport had been deemed outdated, and soon enough plans for the new airport were underway. In 1974, the old airport was officially closed and replaced by the new one, which had a longer runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft. Almost 30 years later, the airport also received a new name, after the former president of Poland, Lech Wałęsa.

Today, the airport is served year-round by 8 airlines, however, during the summer season it is also served by 7 more airlines, with most of them being summer seasonal and charter flights to popular tourist destinations in Europe and Africa.

The pngraf’s rendition of the Gdansk Airport features a custom terminal building with custom-made jetways, 3D vegetation, and custom-made objects and buildings surrounding the airport, and can be downloaded from the X-Plane.org forum. It also requires the following libraries: 3D People, CDB-Library, MisterX Library, OpenSceneryX and RD_Library.

It is also worth mentioning that along with the standard scenery, a lite version named “Default+” is also available, and it only contains the custom terminal building, for users struggling with performance.
