Introduction
The Fokker 100 is a regional jet designed and produced by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer, Fokker. Developed from the Fokker 28, the F100 had its fuselage extended by nearly 6 metres, which was enough to increase the seating capacity from 89 to 122. Alongside the fuselage, the engines and the wings were also subject to improvement, as the new variant was powered by two Rolls-Royce RB.183 Tay engines, while the wings were widened by another 3 metres, and fitted with new flaps and larger ailerons.
After the first flight in 1986, the certification quickly followed, and the first aircraft was delivered to Swissair in 1988. The 100 version proved to be somewhat popular among regional airlines, with over 280 built between 1986 and 1997, when Fokker went bankrupt. As of today, there are approximately over 70 of them in service around the world.
On the other hand, the Fokker 70, which was a shortened variant of the 100, did not achieve much success compared to its longer counterpart. Designed in the early 1990s, the F70 was intended to fill the market gap for an airliner between an ATR and the B737. Compared to the F100, the only difference is the fuselage length, as it’s almost 5 metres shorter, with the rest of the airframe remaining the same.
