Microsoft Releases Sim Update 6 Beta for MSFS 2024
Quick summary· AI-generated
Sim Update 6 beta brings significant performance and visual upgrades including NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 as default upscaling (sharper textures, reduced shimmering) and AMD FSR4 native support. VR improvements target PlayStation VR2 with better center-of-view clarity and reduced memory usage. The update also fixes cockpit LOD popping, distant shadow rendering, ILS/glideslope alignment issues, adds ability to skip walkaround sequences, and includes refinements to taxi guidance, weather systems, multiplayer sync, and avionics like the G3000/G5000 and GNS 430/530.
Excerpt from Threshold
Microsoft has released the first beta of Sim Update 6 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (version 1.8.5.0) on Jul. 6th, including a number of improvements, especially related to performance.
DLSS 4.5
MSFS 2024 now supports NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 technology, which is now the default upscale option.
This is an iteration on DLSS 4, which should reduce shimmering and ghosting, deliver sharper textures at higher resolutions, and provide more accurate pixel reconstruction during upscaling.
FSR4
As for AMD Graphics cards, native FSR4 support has been added as well for those that support it.
Issues related to cockpit texture and LOD popping, distant shadow rendering, and occasional flickering during level-of-detail transitions (such as terrain LOD) have been fixed as well.
VR
The changelog notes improvements to VR, especially PlayStation VR2, including better clarity in the centre of the field of view, improved performance, and reduced memory usage.
There have been some fixes made to cloud rendering and corrections to the night vision effect as well.
Skip walkaround mode
Asobo has now added the ability to skip the walkaround sequence in free flight, when first starting your flight, and you can now jump straight into the cockpit on load-in if you prefer, using an assistance option in the sim settings.
ILS and Glideslope alignment
ILS localizers and glideslopes have been realigned where misaligned, and new GBAS/SBAS paths have been added.
The changelog notes that the groundwork for GLS approaches is now in place, and additional improvements include threshold-crossing height data for glideslopes and better navigation metadata for developers.
QoL and Other Changes
For the full list of changes, review the official release notes.
Other improvements include updated logbook notifications, improved tooltips, a redesigned World Photographer reward screen, and better night lighting at default airports.
Taxi guidance has been refined to prevent incorrect routing and other issues; fixes to weather have been made to improve cloud behaviour in non-live conditions; multiplayer synchronisation has been improved; and TAF data in the EFB has been improved.
Asobo has also made some fixes to the weather radar controls for the G3000/G5000, improved the backlighting on the GNS 430/530 and improved flight planning and nav tools for the Pro Line 21 and UNS-1Ew.
Improvements continue in fuel shutdown sequence behaviour across several models, better cockpit interaction…
