#FSExpoFriday 2026: Laminar Research Announces New X-Plane Scenery Engine

Threshold

Quick summary· AI-generated

Laminar Research revealed X-Plane 12's next evolution: 12.4.4 (Q3 2026) introduces a modern Panel Graphics API built on Vulkan for faster avionics rendering and glass cockpit development, plus SDK improvements and new airports like Farnborough and JFK. Version 12.5.0 (Q4 2026) overhauls the flight model with rotor blade tracking, improved helicopter procedures, better turbine and manifold pressure simulation, and enhanced ground physics and wake turbulence. Most significantly, Laminar announced the X-Plane Tile Scenery Engine, a complete replacement for the aging 2004-era DSF scenery system, representing a fundamental shift in how the sim handles 3D scenery and terrain.

Excerpt from Threshold

Laminar Research went on stage at FlightSimExpo 2026 to outline the next big steps for X-Plane 12, covering a new SDK update, flight model update, and a first look at X-Plane’s brand-new scenery engine, launching in 2026.

These announcements were shared during #FSExpoFriday.

12.4.4 – Panel Graphics API

Laminar started by discussing X-Plane 12.4.4, an update scheduled for release in Q3 2026. Part of 12.4.4 is a new Panel Graphics API, a modern avionics framework which will help developers create advanced cockpit displays and flight instruments.

The Panel Graphics API, built directly on top of Vulkan, will provide a faster, lower-overhead way to render avionics in X-Plane, with support for TrueType font rendering, anti-aliased vector graphics, and direct access to the sim’s map systems, including Synthetic Vision and Weather Radar. In turn, it should make it easier for aircraft developers to build out their glass cockpits and render more capable avionics without having to build every part of the rendering stack by hand.

The Panel Graphics API will support both C++ and Lua via xLUA 2.0, and will also support ImGui and CEF. Developers interested can try it out now.

Also included in X-Plane 12.4.4 are improvements to the SDK, including Weather Radar improvements, CPDLC support, new tools, and more scenery assets.

Laminar highlighted Farnborough Airport, which is a new addition to the X–Plane Scenery Gateway. Another airport coming is New York JFK, also built with custom assets.

12.5.0 – Flight Model update

Laminar then moved on to X-Plane 12.5.0, one of the biggest updates yet, which focuses on the XP flight model. 12.5.0 is planned for Q4 2026 and will bring a long-reaching rework of aircraft behaviour and environmental interaction.

12.5.0 will also introduce rotor blade tracking simulation, improved skid interactions and expanded helicopter procedure support, as well as a new manifold pressure simulation for fixed-wing, improved turbine temperature modelling, better ground physics, improved wake turbulence, stronger swirling prop stream effects and updated hydraulic systems.

X-Plane’s New Scenery Engine: The Tile Scenery Engine

In a major announcement, Laminar has also unveiled a completely new scenery engine for X-Plane 12: the X-Plane Tile Scenery Engine. This is a future scenery system designed to replace the existing DSF architecture, which dates back to 2004.

X-Plane has used the current DSF system for more than two decades, and Laminar…
